Page 1 of 5 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. -Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
This verse has received quite a bit of attention in the last few years, and I know it has helped me during difficult times. Of course, it is a little vague. All we know is that God has plans for us and that His plans will not cause us harm. Basically, we know there is a plan, but there's nowhere in the Bible where you can turn to find out exactly what God's plan for you specifically might be. So, how do you find out what God's will for your life is? Before you can know God's plans for you, you have to be willing to live in His Word. Think about it, how can you find out God's will for your life if you aren't living in His will for your soul? To do this there are some things in your personal life that you have to check for.
The first thing you need to do is what I like to call a "Bible check." This is where you check the Bible to make sure that your desires, hopes, and your lifestyle match up with the Word of God. The Bible may not tell you what it is specifically that God wants you to do, but it will tell you some specific behaviors that will help you know God better.
If the way you live your life and your future plans line up with the principles of the Bible, you are able to learn God's will for your life. If your lifestyle and your plans for the future don't match the Bible, then you are not allowing God to teach and direct you.
Think of it this way, for God to speak to you, you must first be willing to listen. By making your life match His word, your life is showing that you are willing to better yourself, that you are willing to listen to His voice. If you continue living in a way that runs contradictory to God's Word, your life is showing that you are not willing to better yourself and that you aren't ready to listen. By living in that way, you are not allowing God to teach you. He may be speaking, but you aren't listening.
